Our Mothers Knew It

I was reading the account in the Book of Mormon today about the Stripling Warriors. I've always loved the verse in Alma 56:48 where they say, "We do not doubt our mothers knew it." Today I think I've read that scripture right for the first time. I use to read it as if there was a comma, making the scripture read, "We do not doubt, our mothers knew it." But, if you read it correctly, the scripture has a whole new meaning. I realized today that the scripture is saying they they did not doubt their mothers had a testimony.

As a mother, I can think of no greater thing for my children to say about me, the fact that I have a testimony and believe and live it with all my heart. Isn't it true that we teach best by example? I hope I can be an example of the believer to my children so that they too can say, "We did not doubt our mother knew it." And from that example, I can plant a seed in their hearts making their testimonies begin to grow, so that someday they may also say of themselves, "We knew it!"

And just because I know my mom reads my blog....Mom, I want you to know that I can say "I do not doubt my mother knew it." You have always been the perfect example of faith and testimony in my life. Thank you for your strength. I love you.

  1. That hit me a while ago and thinking about it in church one day prompted me to get up and share my testimony (dang promptings) just so my kids COULD say that. I love that meaning, I think it's more profound than how most people think it's supposed to be.

  3. I've used this example several times to my own children, and also bore my testimony about how I wanted my children to KNOW I had a testimony. This excerpt brings tears to my eyes every time I read it, and re-read it. I worry so much that my girls just don't get how AMAZING the gospel of Jesus Christ is!! I want so badly for them to have their own, strong testimonies so that all future posterity will be able to look at the women in their family and say, "THEY KNEW IT." I know that both of my grandmothers "knew it." I also know that my own mother "knew it." And I pray that this testimony will continue on with my own children and grandchildren saying the same thing about me.
